Hello beautiful soul! I’m excited that you found my site and I hope that you enjoy everything you see here! This page is dedicated specifically to one of my passions, getting away from the constant surveillance of large corporations always trying to sell us endless mountains of useless crap.
A while back I realized that there are beautiful, incredible alternatives to most of the ways that we live our lives today, that are often off the radar usually because they’re open-source community passion projects that aren’t advertised and therefore don’t make massive conglomerates any money. They generally a little bit weaker and not as extravagant or avant-garde, but they get the job done, especially since so many of us in this day and age are on a budget.
The way I set up this list is by category and I only put software on here that I’ve personally either worked with or have seen others work with extensively enough to be able to recommend it on here. I give my reasoning as concisely as possible as well. Of course, always do your own research on what’s right for you. Enjoy!!
Operating Systems
This is a must for being first on my list because of my growing dissatisfaction with the current state of the major OS companies out there.
Mac/Apple is known for having no control over your system, no ability to customize anything, treating their consumer base like toddlers that can’t tell their nose from their elbows, inventing the entire concept of “planned obsolescence”, and expecting everyone to shell out the big bucks simply for the name and the sleek design.
Windows/Microsoft is no better with the amount of bloat on the system and how slow it becomes when forcing features onto users that nobody asked for, constantly overstepping with regards to user privacy, and the endless advertisements that they bake into every single operating system. They have been the top company for so long that they stopped maintaining a quick working for the sake of jamming more and more features into the system for the sake of “innovation”. And to top it all off, the peeps that own this lovely company have been found in the files, you know which ones.
Here are free, faster, more customizable alternatives that are all Linux
:
(And yes, you can install them all on ancient machines and they’ll still run, unlike new versions of either of the above that force you to upgrade hardware.)
Hint: If you click on the buttons, it’ll take you to their websites.
Ubuntu
This is another good distro to start with and my first ever distro that I installed on my first ever laptop back when I was a kid. It's owned and maintained by a pretty big company, but they're one of the good guys in my opinion as they're adamant about keeping the software free to use for everyone. So they have the resources to keep it constantly updating and innovating.
Cachy
This is a more intermediate distro and one that I use now on most of my computers (except the big one that I make my game on because most of the software on there still can't correctly run on Linux - but the second it can, I'm getting rid of MicroSlop once and for all!) I love it so much, I was floored when I couldn't find a button for it, so I made one myself. I riced(customized) the hell out of it and it's my pride and joy and what's made me love being on my computer again in recent years. It can run all the games I care about (I luckily don't play the ones that use anti-cheat, as it can't run those too well), and it's far faster that when my computers had Windows installed. One of the main things I think I've realized was that Windows was either so bogged down with bloat (or they were trying to implement some sort of forced obsolescence) that it would cause my computers to overheat to an insanely dangerous degree. But now they don't at all and run like a charm. So I'm never looking back.
Arch
This is HIGHLY NOT recommended for beginners. You will want to shoot yourself. And because of the insane learning curve, you'll understand the joke that the Linux community has regarding Arch Linux users. Similarly to how people who do Cross-Fit never shut up about Cross-Fit, Arch users never shut up about Arch. Hence the phrase "I use Arch BTW", that they'll insert wherever they can to seem extra smart. I don't actually recommend this unless you have copious amounts of time to waste and are a higher level Linux user. I just included this here for the joke.

HOW TO ARCHIVE A WEBSITE! – This may very well be the most important one here, especially if you remake your website over and over and over again. I wish I knew this back when I was redoing my website a million times over. It would be nice to get back some of the features I deleted against my better judgement while following the advice of others.

Misc Others
This is all the random other stuff I recommend in no particular order. Here you’ll find everything from nice ad-blockers to VPN and private email services. Anything to get away from the ogling eyes of Google, Meta, etc.
UBlock Origin – This is one of the best ad blockers in the world. Everyone needs to get it!
Proton Suite (Email and Vpn, etc.) – The best out there for privacy to get away from the big corpos and nice and free for basic usage.
